This is a hard discussion. It depennds, are you determined to exclusively breastfeed? If yes then answer is every time the baby wants to eat. Most infants in general need to eat every two to three hours. However, how often a baby wants to eat can vary between every hour to four hours. Most babies will self regulate, wanting to go to breast is a normal baby response. Babies go to breast for many reasons, food, comfort, pacify, security and just to be close. Do they always empty? No.
If you let them determine when to go to breast they will tell your body how much milk to make. If you use a clock based schedule you will tell your body how much milk to make.
Milk is made because the breast is emptied. So the. more often you empty the more milk you make. What is normal? That depends on what point in your post partum period you are in. Milk supply normally regulated (normalizes) at about 4-6 weeks.
If you are pumping to feed this is an expectation. If the first month of exclusive breastfeeding is going well, your milk production dramatically increases from about one ounce (30 mL) on Day 1 to a peak of about 30 ounces (900 mL) per baby around Day 40.1 Draining your breasts well and often naturally boosts your milk during these early weeks. But at first, while your milk production is ramping up, expect to pump less milk than you will later.
So the short answer is there is no too often to feed.
