When should you see a Lactation Consultant?

When should you consider scheduling with a Lactation consultant? There are many answers.


Support and instruction for your baby

  • For jaundice

  • Refuses to latch (at any time in the process)

  • is not gaining enough (at least 3/4 to 1 oz per day)

  • Is gaining too quickly (more than 1/5 oz per day)

  • Cries "a lot" or is fussy.

  • Feeds all the time

  • Is late preterm or premature

  • Spits up "a lot"


Indications the breastfeeding parent needs help

  • Inverted nipples

  • painful or cracked nipples

  • Engorgement

  • Are ill or needs surgery.

  • Have a low milk supply

  • Are going back to work

  • Have plugged ducts or mastitis

  • Are experiencing stressful feeling with feeding

  • Are taking medications

  • Need advice selecting a breast pump

  • Want to breastfeed an adopted baby or reestablish you milk supply

  • Are getting conflicting advice or feeling discouraged about breastfeeding
